We tend to baby-proof our homes when we have toddlers and young children living with us. But how often do we look at our parents’ homes to identify potential hazards as they grow older? For that matter, if we don’t have young children, we often don’t really pay attention to our own homes as we get older.
Homes that, for years have been safe havens, become danger zones, often without our noticing it. When you’ve lived in the same home for a long time, it’s easy to overlook the door that sticks, the light bulbs that don’t provide enough illumination, the wobbly chair … so many things that we’ll fix “some day”. Too often, that “some day” doesn’t come until there’s been an accident of some sort. The accident can be as minor as a bruise and perhaps some embarrassment, but, among older people, it could also be much more serious and involve hospitalization and prolonged care and therapy.
This session looks at some of the common hazards in the home, and talks about easy and usually inexpensive steps a person can take to reduce the risks of injury at home.
